God Answers Prayers

Yesterday at work I wrote about how I felt like I was missing too many Church Services due to my job.  It has really had me down and struggling to keep an up beat attitude in life.  I asked that everyone pray for me about my situation and I too soaked it in prayer and God saw fit to answer very soon.

That very evening my supervisor allowed me to leave work early so that I could make it to the evening Service.  I thank God for showing he still cares about me and that he understands my struggle.  I know that god looks out for us and I know that he understands what we are going through, but it is nice to when God shows it.

I hope and pray that God is working things out for the better in each of your lives.

Keeping you all in my prayers,
Cainan

Feb 1 Bible Study

I am very excited about this Tuesday night.  We will be rapping up Philippians and discussing a new path for the studying to continue.  We will have a good group here especially if everyone from last week comes and those who said they were going to come this week show up as well.  I can't wait to see what God has in store for us in the coming weeks.

My thoughts for you rest in two verses in chapter 3.  Verses 8 and 9.
8Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,
9And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

Paul was a wealthy man and a prominent man.  Paul was in line to be a great man in the Sanhedrin which is a council of priests/ judges that ruled the church at that time (they were pharisees, and scribes).  Paul was a well respected man before his conversion.  He had lots to live for and lots to lose and here he says that he is glad that he lost it because now he has gained knowledge of salvation.  He says that everything he had he counts them as DUNG compared to having Christ.  He speaks of trading his righteousness that he had through the law but having God's righteousness through faith of Christ.

Wow. if we could only live the way that Paul did, selfless and all about the furtherance of the Gospel.  We would change the world and wouldn't even have to try because when you allow God to change your mindset he will automatically change those around you and then you have the butterfly effect.  Wouldn't it be great if our butterfly was God?  What kind of change do you think would happen if we quit hindering God in the name of religion or in the name of political correctness?  Just think what God will do if only we would step back and let him.

Keeping you all in my prayers,

VBS Becomeing Something More

Vacation Bible School has, in the past, been something that a few people have been involved in and the target audience has been slack because of this.  Please don't misunderstand what I am saying, our VBS programs have been great and we have done a lot of things with it, BUT it could be so much more than that.

This year we are planning a VBS/Summer Day Camp.  This is going to be exciting and fun.  It will be a huge success and we will have lots of kids at it.  We will be hosting it here at the church building.  It is going to be the biggest push targeted toward kids that we have ever had.

It will be five days and it will be twelve hours each day.  WHOA!  oh never mind I don't guess your god can do that.  The only way that God wouldn't bless this is if we don't have faith that he will and if we aren't willing to work to make this happen.  To all the nay-sayers out there, I have the faith that God will be in this and that he will bless it beyond our expectations.

There will be a lot of planning that Pastor Jeff, Sis. Cathy, Sis. Natalie, Sis. Heater and I will be doing.  We can't do this alone.  This will be bigger than the Light The Night With Jesus event that the Church hosted back in October.  Which by the way was a huge success.  It took the whole Church to organize and work the function so you can imagine how badly we need your help.

There will be a VBS planning meeting on the Second Sunday in February following the morning service.  I invite you to join us then to find out what you can do to help make this year's VBS a success.

Keeping you all in my prayers,
Cainan

Decisions to be Made About Moving Forward

First and foremost we have to decide that we want to move forward.  there are many areas in which our church can progress.  We have several physical things around the Church building that could use some attention.  We could use a little more construction in our Children's Church Chapel, we could use a new brick finish to our new Sanctuary, we could use some construction in our unfinished basement area, we could use some work on our parking lot (refinishing on the old and adding to what we have), and we could use a better place for our storage and distribution center for our Food Share program.

We also have some ministerial areas that could use some attention. We could use some more supplies for our Sunday School and Children's Church, we could use a playground to help attract younger families, we could use a visitation program (both to the shut-ins/ hospitalized and to the non church goers), we could use a website, we could use an Sermon on CD Distribution ministry.

There are a lot of things that we could use and a lot of things that we could do but if Gateway is going to make it we have to decide to move forward.  I have decided to do my part in Gateway progressing for God.  I hope you decide to as well.

Here is how we can do this on an individual basis.  We each need to...
you guessed it, pray to God and ask for knowledge and incite in to his will.  We also need to back our Pastor, he will make the final decision about what the church is going to do next.  However just because he will make the final decision about things doesn't mean that he doesn't need our help.

Last night Ben Tyre, our sound room tech, and I looked into what it will take to start a new website for the church.  We plan to put together a presentation with several options that we think are good for the church, some free, some not free, some fancy, and some simple.  We are going to do this and let Pastor Jeff advise as to which route if any he feels led that Gateway should take.

I would like to encourage you to think about something that you could help the church with and do some research and planning so that you too can meet with Pastor Jeff for his advice about what Gateway needs in whatever area of ministry you are trying to help with.  I just want to caution everyone that not every idea is a good idea and that Pastor Jeff might need to change a few of your ideas.  I promise that he will not intentionally do anything to offend you, but he has to keep in mind everything that goes on at Gateway.  Pastor Jeff will have to give an account to God for everything that happens here so we all need to keep in mind that Pastor Jeff is close to God, Pastor Jeff is as concerned if not more concerned about everything than you are. I want to encourage you to take into consideration how I know he isn't doing any thing to offend you by making changes to your ideas.  I know because he does it to me all the time.  There are very few things that I do at the church that I haven't already discussed with Pastor Jeff and that he hasn't helped me out with by changing a few things that I had in mind.

Again I want to encourage you to step up and determine that you are going to help the Church and that you are going to do it the right way, and that you are not going to take it personal if Pastor Jeff has a few suggestions to make your ideas better fit the path that God has Gateway Baptist Church on.

Keeping you all in my prayers,

A Stuggle to do what is Right

I am sitting here at work today, a Sunday, a Sunday that is supposed to be my off day.  I will be missing three weeks in a row from the Sunday Services at Gateway.  This bothers me to no end.

I know that everyone knows that Pastor Jeff is bi vocational, meaning that he has a job that he goes to for a living and he is the full time pastor here at Gateway.  Pastor Jeff has recently had a shift change at his secular job which interfered with his role as a Pastor here on Wednesday Nights.  This shift change began toward the end of last year, and Pastor Jeff had to start missing the Wednesday night services.  He soaked the issue in prayer and was joined in prayer over this matter by the congregation.  Right around the Thanksgiving Holiday God answered our prayers in a big way.  It excites me to know that God can do all things, and that he is on our side.  God has made a way for Pastor Jeff to continue his job on this new shift and be off on Wed. nights.

That being said I want to ask everyone to Join me in prayer about my job.  I am a Deputy Sheriff in Cobb County.  Everyone knows that this is a career which requires service 24 hrs a day everyday.  I realize that there will be conflicts with my secular job and my commitment as a full time servant of Jesus Christ.  I ask that you pray that my time away from my ministry due to work is minimal and that I am not assigned any extra duty work days on Sunday, because I miss being at my Church.  I also would like for everyone to pray for me to gain the wisdom about what God wants from me, because I asked for more extra days at work but when I received the news that what I had asked for is now hindering my ministry I realized that I didn't have such a good grasp on what God would have me to do.

Thanking you all for your prayers and still keeping you in mine,
Cainan

I couldn't say it any better (Bible Study e-mail from Justin)

This morning I had a few minutes so I checked my e-mail to see if we had any updates from anyone participating in the Bible Study.  Justin Harris had sent a message inviting more people to come and updating everyone on what we studied last week.  Please take a little time to read what he had to say.  It touched my heart and even though I was at the Bible Study last Tuesday it did me a lot of good having God's word emphasized to me again.

Hey guys,

So I thought Tuesday night went really well. It was good to have three more people join us and I'm excited about what God is doing through this bible study. For those of you who couldn't make it this week, we missed having you there and hope to see you next week. As most of you know we are studying the book of Philippians. We started in chapter 1 last night and covered all of the verses through chapter 2 verse 18. For next week pick up with Chapter 2 Verse 19 and finish the book. We may not finish the entire book next week, but it is possible, so just to be safe, finish chapter 2 and then read chapters 3 and 4.

I will do my best to give some highlights of what we covered this week, but this will no doubt be incomplete, so if anyone has anything to add to this, please do so.

Ok, so the first thing we noticed when we were reading this letter is who it came from. Verse 1 tells us that Paul and Timothy are the authors responsible for this letter. As we touched on Tuesday, it is interesting to point out that these two guys referred to themselves as "bond-servants of Christ." This word "bond-servant" means slave. As Cainan mentioned, these guys were compelled to serve Christ; they had no other choice. But it should also be noted that this is something they did joyfully. Throughout the letter Paul makes references to his suffering, but he is always quick to rejoice in them.

Philippians 1:3-4, 9 show us that Paul is constantly praying for the church at Philippi. He not only tells them that he is praying for them, but he specifically tells them what he is praying for. In verse 9 he writes that he is praying that their "love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment." This is something that we all could use, and as Cainan said, this is something we are praying that God will bless us with through studying His word and going to Him in prayer.

I want to take a second and talk about chapter 1 verse 6. This is one of those verses that I run to when things are not going so good in my life. Paul is telling the believers at Philippi that he is confident God will perfect the good work that He began in their lives until the day of Christ Jesus. What does this verse tell me? Well, first and most importantly this verse tells believers that it is God who began this good work in us and it is Him who will carry the work through to completion. And what is this good work? Well, this good work, as Paul references in verse 7, is salvation, which is from the grace of God. So God is working in believers to perfect the salvation that He began. This also tells me that the believers at Philippi were not perfect. Because if they were already perfect, then God would not need to continue "performing" or "perfecting" the work in them until the day of Christ. When we fail, not if, we can take comfort in this verse knowing that God is working in our lives and eventually we will be perfected on the day when we are united with Jesus.

The next section we talked about was Philippians 1:12-20. In this section of his letter, Paul tells the church about his imprisonment. During this time Paul was in prison at Rome. However, instead of being sorrowful over his circumstances, Paul rejoices because his imprisonment has "turned out for the greater progress of the gospel." (c1,v12) He then tells the church that many have believed in Christ because of what has happened to him. Talk about selflessness! This guy was in prison and people were trying to cause him harm, yet the only thing he cared about was the spread of the gospel of Jesus. He goes on to say that he will not be put to shame because Christ will be exalted in his body, either in life or death. Paul is prepared to die for this gospel. Verse 21 even suggests that Paul is not only prepared for death, but in a way he welcomes death. He writes that "to live is Christ and to die is gain." This verse is overwhelming because Paul is saying that death is like a promotion or an improvement on his current condition. This type of thinking is very foreign to our culture today, but when I pause and think about what Paul is saying, it actually makes perfect sense. For any believer, death should not be something we are terrified of, because those who have faith in Jesus will be with Him when they die, and that is definitely "gain" as Paul puts it. Still, Paul follows this thought with another that when he says he is torn from both directions because he knows it is much better for the church at Philippi for him to remain with them instead of going to be with Christ. Again, here is another example of Paul's selflessness. Yes, Paul is actually being selfless by wanting to stay alive!!!

One more note on this section comes from verse 29 of chapter 1. Here Paul writes that it has been granted (to the church) not only for them to believe, but also to suffer. He straight up tells the church that they are going to suffer. In fact, he says that it has been granted them to suffer. However, this suffering should not be something that keeps us down, because we have a Spirit of power with us. Paul does not really say much in this chapter to comfort them about the sufferings they will face, but he gets to that later in the letter.

Ok, chapter 2 has several points of interest. From the very beginning of this chapter Paul is telling the church at Philippi how they should act. As Heather said on Tuesday, this was probably addressing some of factions within the church because Paul is telling them to be "of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose." (c2,v2) He tells them that they should regard one another more important than themselves. This is one of those verses which may be easy to say, but it is impossible to put into practice without some help from above. Jesus said love your neighbor as yourself, and Paul is telling us to consider others more important than our ourselves. I think at the root of both of these commands is a simple 4 letter word: love. Christians are commanded to love others, because this is how the world will see a difference. What we say means nothing without love. I guess the Beatles were right, all you really need is love!

Verses 5-8 deal with the person of Jesus Christ. Here is a place in scripture which points to the validity of the Trinity. Paul says that Jesus existed in the form of God, but He emptied Himself to take on the form of a bond-servant (slave), and was made in the likeness of men. Paul tells the believers to have this attitude that Jesus had, who "did not consider equality with God a thing to be grasped." (v6) He is telling them to be humble and do things for others in love.

The last thing I want to mention are verses 12-14. Paul tells the believers to "work out your salvation." It is important here to realize that Paul is not telling them to work in order to gain their salvation. In other places of scripture, Paul is adamant that salvation is by faith in Jesus Christ alone!  Instead, here he is saying that one who has received salvation will be compelled to obedience because "it is God who is at work in you." (v13) Salvation is not based on anything we do, and if it was we would all be in trouble. But thankfully God has made another way which is by faith in His Son Jesus Christ. So take heart in knowing that you don't have to be good enough, moral enough, religious enough, or smart enough. God has made the way for us, and that way is by faith in Jesus. I'll leave you guys with a story I heard once and I think it is a wonderful illustration of the gospel.

There was this guy from India who was a Buddhist. He compared life to a journey; a journey up a tall mountain. He viewed his religion as a path up the mountain. At the top of the mountain was God, or in his view "enlightenment" or "nirvana." One day this guy came in contact with a Christian missionary. The man shared his philosophy about the mountain to the Christian. He told the missionary that he did not necessarily disagree with Christianity, but that he thought his path was more efficient to reach the top of the mountain. But he assured the missionary that the Christian faith was also a path that led up the mountain, just a different one. So the missionary asked the man if he believed all religions would make it to the top of the mountain. The man affirmed this statement and said that all religions are basically the same because we are all trying to work/earn/pray/fast/meditate our way to the top of this mountain where God is. The Christian missionary then looked at this man and said, "What if I told you about a religion where God has come to the bottom of the mountain and carries you with Him to the top?" The man said, "Well I would want to know that way" The missionary looked at him and said, "That way is Jesus Christ." Again, take comfort knowing that we don't have to try to make it up the mountain. We have a God who has come to us and if we have faith, He will carry us the entire way.

I can't even imagine a way that I could make it up the mountain without God.  I just want to say thanks to Justin for his commitment to this Bible Study and let you know that I am praying for you this morning as you set up for the services in Warner Robins.

I hope this touched some one's heart the way it did mine.

Staying Faithful

It is late and I should be asleep, but I couldn't go to sleep knowing that I have been talking so much about how Committing things to God is good a way to ENCOUNTER God and strengthen your relationship with him.  I have committed to God this ministry that I will post a new blog everyday so that I can keep my mind on him and things that bring him honor and glory.  I couldn't sleep thinking what a hypocrite I would be if I didn't stay faithful to this commitment.  This thought has nearly driven me to tears.  I want everyone to know that I Love God, and that I am changing my life to be closer to him.  I will go a few more minutes without (much needed) sleep if it means that I will be able to keep my commitment to him and to not take a few steps back.

I ask that you all pray for me as this weekend is trying my faithfulness and my commitment.  I need God to give me strength to carry on.  I hope that no one else has slipped in there commitments lately and I pray that you all stay on your quest to become closer to God.

Febuary Friday Nights it is a great way to COME CLOSE TO GOD

This morning I was sitting around and just thinking about what is going on at the church that will be able to get every one closer to God.  I know that I have been talking a lot about prayer and how it is the key to encountering God, and it is. However I think that there is more to it than just prayer.  We all have to do things that keep us busy.

Pastor Jeff has planned a (not so traditional) revival for us in February.  Each Friday night we will be having a service with a different local Pastor bringing God's message.  I believe that we will all be closer to God if we get involved in the revival.

This doesn't mean doing something during the service but doing something in your Heart.  To make a change in our hearts isn't easy.  Here are a few things that we can do to do this:
come every night
invite someone to join us
pray for the preacher each night
bring what you've committed to bring for the dinner afterwards

Here are a few extra things we can do if we are in the choir or play in the band:
be there early
be in your spot either in the Choir loft or at your instrument ready for the service to begin 10 minutes before it starts
the band should play an upbeat song as soon when they get ready
know what we will be singing
come to our choir practices
and do not ever act in a way that may show that you are upset about something
do not complain about anything, but rather if  you see a problem get with Pastor Jeff to see what he thinks is the right thing for each situation

I know that this is a lot of things that we can do, but if e really want a change in our hearts it isn't much.  I truly believe that the more we do to make these services a success that God will bless our hearts.  When we do these things our hearts will change and we wont even realize it until it has already happened.

Prayer emerges from the Bible Study

In each of our Bible Studies we have talked about prayer and how important it is.  Prayer is the best way to get us closer to God.  When you take some time and really pour your heart out to God, you will see just how easy it is.  Then if you take time to pray for someone else you will see how rewarding it is.  I have been spending a lot more time in prayer and I really feel closer to God.

Wednesday Nights are no less than SPECTACULAR

We had a wonderful service last night.  I am surprised at how much is going on here at Gateway and how good has been considering that Pastor Jeff told us last night that he has received more prayer requests in the last 4 days than he has since he has been our Pastor.

Pastor Jeff is going though the story of the temple being rebuilt at Jerusalem.  He is mainly using the books of Ezra and Haggai.  (because the Bible isn't written in chronological order)  We are learning that one of the most important themes in the Bible is the Building of the Temple / Church.  Hey, we are trying to rebuild the REAL Church.  Just think, if God never changes, and God thinks it was important for the people in the old testament to build the church, then it stands to reason that GOD THINKS IT IS IMPORTANT for us to 'Build the Church.'

God saw that all the older/ ancient people did not like the way that the new temple was turning out and he told them to be strong and work because he was with them.  So I say unto everyone who doubts that things can be as good as they used to be, God is still with us.  I know; I can feel his presence in our services and in our Bible Study.

Pastor Jeff is going to continue on the thought of building the Real Church and will be teaching about when God's Temple is rebuilt.  I want to encourage everyone to come and to be a part of our Wednesday Night service.  If you have been neglecting that service then you haven't been as close to God as you could be.

Cainan

LOTE lockin with the UPPER ROOM

I am looking forward to Friday Night.  Bro. Marcus and Sis. Angela are planning a lot of fun things for this Lock-In.  We will have a scavenger hunt, and a Wii Bowling tournament.  There will be a lot of games.  But the featured event is the video put out by Focus on the Family.  It is part of the Life On The Edge (LOTE) series.  The discussion in the video is titled "Keys to a Life Long Love."

I understand that the video is a bit old and the technology is out of date but the message in the video holds true and strong.  Pastor Jeff started showing these videos a few years ago and we are about half way through the series for the third time.  We show one of the videos  every year at our Annual Youth Lock-In.  I have seen each video in the set and can say with out a doubt that if our youth will listen to the message and put aside the fact that the video was made before they were born that they will learn a valuable lesson from them.  Pastor Jeff has said before and I say now that I trust what Dr. Dobson has to say.

I pray that we have a good attendance, and we all have a lot of fun.

Bible Study Success

Wow!
Last night's Bible Study was very good.  We had a great time while we studied Phillipians Ch.1 - 2:18.  We looked into the heart of the Apostle Paul.  While Paul was in prison in Rome he wrote the the church at Phillipi and told them that he was praying that God would increase their knowledge and discernment so that they could could better decide what is good so that they will stay pure until Judgement Day.  Since Paul tells them what he thinks is important for them it lets them know what they should think is important.  We can all take the same advice and pray for ourselves and for each other that we may all grow in knowledge and judgement.

We can also gain solace that Paul, even in his affliction was happy that the Gospel was spreading.  So even if Satan has gotten you down don't give up, God still has work to do.  It was evident last night that there are still people eager to ENCOUNTER God.  With the good number that we had last night and the promise of more next week I am truly excited.  I see all around that Satan is working to hinder the church but everyone can be comforted that GOD is also working in the Church.  GOD HASN'T FORSAKEN THE RIGHTEOUS.

We should all strive to be able to say what Paul said, "For me to live is Christ and to die is to gain."
I hope we all know that if we die we will go to Heaven, and have the determination to spread the gospel the whole time we live.

Sunday School Report

The attendance for Sunday School has been a little lower than we would like for it to be.  Pastor Jeff has expressed, in his own blog, that he is going to have a high attendance Sunday on April 17.

This is the One year anniversary of us moving into our new Sanctuary.  This will be a big day for our Church.  That being said, I want to encourage you to not wait for a 'special date' to start working on Building the Church.

Pastor Jeff has said many times that now that the physical building of our Church is finished that we need to build the REAL Church.  What's that? You wonder what the real Church is, you thought that this big fancy building was the REAL Church?  Well let me clear things up.  The congregation is the REAL Church, it is the people.   I pray that I am not the only other one who shares Pastor Jeff's burden for the church.

As a personal note to Pastor Jeff:
I want you know that I am IN, and I mean completely IN.  I am IN as in I am Saved, I am IN as in I am willing to do what I can to help build the REAL Church, and I am IN as in I am going to keep building my relationship with God so that I can have more close ENCOUNTERS WITH GOD.

Now a note to everyone else:
If you want to let Pastor Jeff know that you are IN he is still wanting letters of your testimony, and you could also take the advice given in James 2:18
"...I will shew thee my faith by my works."
Lets show Pastor Jeff that we are IN by what we do around the community to build th REAL Church.

Keeping you all in my prayers,
Cainan

I just can't wait

I can hardly wait to tell all that God is doing at Gateway.  First I want to express my excitement about the Bible Study that I mentioned in JANUARY IS ALMOST OVER.  I want everyone to know that they are invited.  We are going to be going through the book of Philippians starting tonight.  Justin came to me with the idea of getting together to talk about the Bible and the more we talked about it the more we wanted to have a weekly Bible Study.  Last week was our first week and I think that it was a huge success.  There are several people that have expressed interest in the idea.  I am looking forward to a good meeting tonight.

There are several other things that are happening at Gateway.  There will be more posts discussing them later.

As always remember me in prayer that I will continue on this upward path as I am trying to have a closer encounter with GOD.

Keeping you all in my prayers,
Cainan

January is Almost Over

January is almost through...

Are you through with all your resolutions?
I hope that you are able to stick to all the resolutions that you have made in this new year.  Most of all I hope and pray that you made a resolution to encounter God and to make your relationship with him stronger than ever.

I have done this very thing.  I have begun praying more, doing more for God through the church, and studying my Bible more.  I ask that everyone pray for me, Pastor Jeff, and Marcus (the teacher in the upper room) as we begin this new and exciting ministry of communicating through these Blogs.  I know that you may think that I am doing this just because they are and you would be right.  If they had not already started a blog I probably would not have either, but I am not doing this solely to join the bandwagon   it is also to increase my relationship with God.

I will be discussing topics such as our Sunday School, our church events, and the Bible Study that my friend Justin and I have started on Tuesday nights at 8:00 - 9:30 pm.

Keeping you all in my prayers,
Cainan
